TECHNICAL DESIGNER
HIGHER VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
PROGRAMME 200 CREDITS
ONE OF THE MOST VITAL ROLES IN THE DESIGN TEAM
As a pattern maker, you are the bridge between creative design and technical production. You transform design sketches into production-ready garments by creating patterns, measurement charts, and technical specifications. You lead fittings, assess prototypes, and adapt garments for manufacturing – with both precision and intuition. To succeed in this role, you need a keen eye for detail, a solid understanding of fit and materials, and technical proficiency in both manual and digital tools. Strong organizational skills and the ability to collaborate closely with designers and production teams are also essential.
SHAPE THE GARMENTS OF THE FUTURE – DIGITALLY AND BY HAND
This program provides in-depth knowledge in both traditional and computer-based pattern making, fit analysis, garment grading, and industrial sewing techniques. You’ll work with industry-standard software such as Lectra Modaris and CLO 3D, gaining expertise in 2D and 3D pattern construction and digital workflows.
Throughout the year, you'll work on a variety of garments – from sketch to final product – in hands-on projects. You’ll learn how to adapt patterns for large-scale production with a focus on quality, efficiency, and sustainability. You'll practice fittings, quality control, and communication with design and manufacturing teams.
A deep understanding of garment construction is essential to create well-thought-out sewing patterns and tech packs. Therefore, industrial sewing is an integrated part of the curriculum.
INTERNSHIP: YOUR FIRST STEP INTO THE INDUSTRY
The program includes a 6-week internship (LIA – Learning in a Work Environment) at a fashion or apparel company. You'll also complete a 4-week graduation project, which often leads to job opportunities or continued collaboration.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE IN PATTERN MAKING
To keep up with the pace of the program, you should already have a solid foundation in manual pattern making and sewing. If you haven’t studied fashion or garment construction before, we strongly recommend completing our preparatory course Pattern Making, Sewing & Design or equivalent.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES & FUTURE OUTLOOK
After graduation, you’ll be qualified to work as a Pattern Maker, Garment Technician, Technical Designer, Design Technician, Production Technician, or as an assistant in design or buying teams. The fashion industry is rapidly embracing digital workflows. More and more companies are discovering the benefits of 3D in the design and development process. Skilled pattern makers who master both Lectra Modaris and CLO 3D are in high demand. Many of our graduates find employment immediately after completing the program – at established fashion houses, independent brands, and international companies.
